Customised T-shirt

Do you have a favourite t-shirt from childhood? Recently, on a trip back to Mum's place,
I rediscovered my old Brownies t-shirt in surprisingly good nick. The only problem was
that the neck and arm cuffs were too small, so I decided to revamp it. Here's how you can
do it too:

Cut off the sleeves starting close to the armpit, sloping outwards.

Double fold sleeve and tack at the shoulder seam with needle and thread.
Now cut off the neckband as close to the stitching as possible.
Fold the fabric edge towards the wrong side and then fold hem back on itself. Pin in place.Sew a zigzag stitch, catching both the fabric fold and raw edge in yourstitches.
Press the seam to set the stitches.

  1. I loved the brownies! I was pre-tshirt days but I do still have my brownie belt!! That has no chance of fitting though. Nice tutorial :)

    1. You're welcome! Necklines always leave me feeling a bit nervous but this one turned out well, it's a good trick! You can always top stitch it afterwards too but my seam was so narrow I didn't bother. Good luck customising your t-shirts! xx

  4. This is great! Just yesterday I found my old Fat Willy's Surf Shack t-shirt and it could do with some alterations. Definitely going to do some alterations now. Thanks!

    1. Hey Jen,

Oh cool, nothing better than an old surfer tee, all sun-faded and worn in!

Good luck giving it a fresh breath of life, hope you get lots of wear out of your new creation :o)

  5. Thanks for the tutorial! I've got quite a few old t-shirts I wanted to remodel but I couldn't work out what to do with the necklines, so thank you for showing me.

  6. Hi Alex, you are most welcome :o)

I know, necklines are baffling, it took me a few trial and errors but I think this way works well...

    Good luck!
